The LCRA (Lower Colorado River Authority) owns and manages almost 11,000 acres of parks along the Colorado River watershed in Texas, scattered all the way from down at Matagorda Bay, on the Gulf Coast, up to the shores of Lake Buchanan in central Texas. While we enjoy overlanding and camping at remote spots whenever we can, these well-maintained parks are a great place to escape to, especially when we only have a day or two to get away.
Our favorite LCRA parks include Muleshoe Bend Recreation Area, Shaffer Bend Recreation Area and Cedar Point Recreation Area. All three of these offer campsites with privacy, and ample room for a family to spread out, especially Cedar Point Recreation Area on Lake Buchanan.
The topography of the park is a mixture of rocky outcroppings and hills and rolling prairie dotted with large oak trees, bordering Lake Buchanan. A small, steep, rocky hill sits between site #3 and sites #4-9. From the top of it, you can catch a great view of the lake. (Watch out for snakes!)
Large, Private Campsites at Cedar Point Recreation Area
One of the best features of Cedar Point Recreation Area on Lake Buchanan are the large campsites, most of which offer some degree of privacy from other campers. Unfortunately, many public camping areas tend to place campsites right next to one another, and this isn’t really our idea of camping. Sites #1, #2 and #3 at Cedar Point offer the most privacy, and camping there feels a lot like having your own private lakefront property to enjoy. (See map below).
Things to do and Amenities at Cedar Point Recreation Area
The level of Lake Buchanan is much lower than normal, because of a prolonged drought in central Texas. Despite the low water level, fishing is still the most popular activity at Cedar Point Recreation Area, along with boating and kayaking. There is a boat ramp (currently closed due to low water), along with a pit toilet, picnic tables, fire rings and BBQ grills. You’ll find lots of wildlife here, including fox, deer, raccoons, and of course, plenty of coyotes in the surrounding hills to serenade you at night.
Getting There
Cedar Point Recreation Area is located at 545 Ranch Rd 3014 in Tow, Texas, which is about 12 miles northwest of Burnet, Texas.
The volunteer park host does a great job of keeping Cedar Point Recreation Area neat and tidy. Be sure to check in with your host on arrival, as well as to check if campfires are allowed. (There are frequently burn bans in effect in Llano county.) For park info call 512-473-3366.
Cedar Point Recreation Area is Dog Friendly
Leashed, well-behaved dogs are welcome at Cedar Point LCRA park. Just be sure to pick up after them (no poop bags are provided, so bring your own), and also watch out for snakes and sticker burrs (we found quite a few of these off the main gravel road).
